Preview of Prologue for "The Lorebook"
This is a revised use of content from Chapters 1-2 that now serve as a "prologue to the Novel titled "Wizard Upon the Mount"
The tower loomed above the dark storm clouds that encircled the tall peak of Mount Kaless. It was there that the aged figure was awakened by activity from the charm resting upon the mantle. Cooling flames flickered in the fireplace below, as the night settled in the darkness of the highest peak in Ar’rin.
The crackling fire in the tower’s main study kept the old wizard warm, as it had for an age. But the figure who looked at the mystical charm in front of him was hardly elderly; his face would have placed him at the end of middle age if you did not know him, or look into his eyes. The grey eyes, with flecks of gold in them, glittered as he watched the mist swirling in the magical artifact
Only the words that he muttered in an ancient tongue revealed what he saw, what only he could see.
It has been found.
The charm, a glass vessel shaped like a book, had rested on the shelf for many decades. Colored gas trapped inside barely swirling in a cloud of purple, blue, and gray. But no longer, as the cascading swirl of color and light filled the room where the wizard was staring intently, a old tome in his lap, sitting upon a stuffed chair by the hearth. The swirl of light and gas collapsed inward, shattering the glass in his hands, and leaving puffs of dark smoke to rise up. The grey eyes filled with wonder and joy as he watched the triumphant end of the spell before him. He knew what it meant, for he had designed the charm in the Age of Kings, long before the fall of the Great Kingdom of Balinor. A dutiful apprentice had forged the charms twin, placing one inside a tomb before it was sealed, locking away a book of dangerous power. The other was brought here, to the tower that was built upon this mystical peak.
He glanced outside to the grove that rested on the path to the tower and whispered the news to the trees, who responded in murmurs and groans, the wind gusting at their command.
“Soon,” was all he answered to their questions.
